[Suggestion] Options menu

Post by NotNull »

The user interface is still in development, so I might speak too early, but Everything has grown adn the current Everything Options menu is less fitting for that (my opinion of course). At least: the General part.

An alternative:
(will take some time to get used to, btw)

** General
Language
Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything
Check for updates on startup
Start Everything on system startup
Run as administrator [1]
Everything Service [1]
scale
Run in background
Create a new window from the system tray
Create a new window when running Everything

[1] Radio buttons instead of checkboxes. Or a dropdownlist

** Windows integration
Show Search Everything folder context menu item
Start menu shortcut
Desktop shortcut
Quick Launch shortcut
URL protocol
EFU file association
Show tray icon
Single click tray
New window Hotkey:
Show window Hotkey:
Toggle window Hotkey:

** Search
Search as you type
Match whole filename when using wildcards
Allow literal operators
Replace forward slashes with backslashes
Operator precedence:
Select search on mouse click
Focus search on activate

** Results
Hide results when the search is empty
Clear selection on search
Close window on execute
Double quote copy as path
Do not select extension when renaming
Sort date descending first
Sort size descending first
Result list focus:
Full row select
Single click open:
Underline icon titles:

** View
Alternate row color
Show row mouseover
Show highlighted search terms
Show selected item in status bar
Show the result count with the selection count
Show total size in status bar
Size standard:
Size format:
Selection rectangle:
Automatically scroll view

** Home
(same)

** Context Menu
(same)

** Fonts and Colors
(same)

** Keyboard
(same, minus window hotkeys)

** UI
(remove)

Thank you for your suggestions NotNull,

I like the Windows integration options page and moving some of the setting items around... added to my TODO list.
Run as administrator [1]
Everything Service [1]
[1] Radio buttons instead of checkboxes. Or a dropdownlist
I will need to handle partially installed states.
The checkboxes could act as radio buttons, or a Manual Management radio button could be added.

Yes, sorry, that is what I wanted to say: like the setup options.

Thanks for considering!

Some more options I need to add:

Move window from Toolbar

Are the Match end of filename with dollar sign and Match start of filename with caret options useful enough to add to the Search options page?

Maybe. The search delay (the amount of milliseconds Everything waits between typing a search and actually starts searching) might be more useful as it has been asked for a couple of times.

Another thought:
Maybe promote the shell extension related setting (max_path, icon_shell_extension, etc) to the options GUI as those are currently the main reason that Everything ever gets into trouble.

Or bundle them all together in one option "Safe Mode", that will neutralize all those 'problematic 'settings. Just thinking out loud ..

This should no longer be an issue.
Everything 1.5 will use short paths for really long filenames when working with the shell.
shell extensions can still blow up when the short path is longer than 259 characters. However, this should be rare.

I've made some changes in Everything 1.5.0.1252a to the Options window:
  • Moved Search and Search Bar related options to Search.
  • Moved Result related options to Results.
  • Added Search Delay option.
It's amazing the Alt keys all work...
I still have some work to do on UI tab.. It's unchanged for now..

I would consider combining those to a single option though. Most who use ^ probably also use $.

Fully agree with that suggestion

This is really minor in the enormity of what Everything is and does, but please consider:
The current "Run as administrator" checkbox is inconsistent and much too subtle. It will usually (but not always**) be filled in blue when Everything is running as admin, does not distinguish between admin from checking the button and invoking Everything with admin credentials and does not provide enough user guidance.

Some words are needed, e.g. "running as administrator", "restart needed to exit admin", etc to distinguish the current state and the future state after a restart.

Considering all of the issues that inadvertently running as an admin can cause there should be more information about when this should be used - maybe just "see help before checking"

Also, and this may just be me, "square checked" in the tool-tip means there is a check mark in the box; contrasted with square filled with a solid color, which should be called something else, maybe just "blue square".

**With Everything running as admin, clear the checkmark and select apply - the box clears but Everything is still running as admin. Exiting from he options panel and reentering will show a blue box.

Thanks for the feedback.

Everything will now show a new "Exit Everything" dialog when unchecking run as administrator.

This dialog will prompt the user to restart Everything manually to run as a standard user.
I have on my TODO list to automate this process. (Relaunch Everything with the user credentials from the Desktop window)

I would also like to disable the "Run as an administrator" checkbox in the shortcut properties when unchecking this option in Everything..
Also, and this may just be me, "square checked" in the tool-tip means there is a check mark in the box; contrasted with square filled with a solid color, which should be called something else, maybe just "blue square".
I'm not sure where I got square-checked from.
tick-checked and square-checked used together should be clear.
The square is not always blue either ;)
The Windows API uses indeterminate-checked.. I'm not sure that's any better..

I'll change this back to:
tick-checked = Run as an administrator
square-checked = Run as a standard user (currently running as an administrator)
unchecked = Run as a standard user
I will make sure to specify tick-checked and square-checked together.
