"Everything" version 1.3.0.629b FAQ

Post by void »

The latest beta version of Everything can be found here
How do I index a network share?
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Folders tab.
  • Click Add....
  • Browse for the network share and click OK.
  • Click OK to begin indexing.
Will Everything monitor changes made to a network share?
Yes, Everything will attempt to monitor changes you make locally to the remote network share.
Changes made remotely are not detected.
What are EFU file lists?
An Everything File URL (EFU) file is a Comma Separated Values (CSV) file that specifies the filename, size, date modified and attributes of files and folders.

File lists are recommended for offline and static file systems.
File lists can be searched by size and date modified instantly.
You can create a file list by clicking on the File list editor from the Tools menu.
How do I search for a file size?

Code: Select all

size:value
For example, to search for files smaller than 1mb:

Code: Select all

size:<1mb
For example, to search for files large than 10gb:

Code: Select all

size:>10gb
It is recommended to limit your search as much as possible before typing in the size: function,
because Everything will have to read the extended file information for each file.

Where did the ETP/FTP/HTTP servers go?
They have been removed from Everything.
I hope to release them as an addon at a later date.
Folder indexing should replace some functionality of ETP.
What is Diacritics?
Diacritics or Diacritical marks are glyphs added to some letters, for example: á (a with ´ diacrtic).
With Match Diacritical Marks disabled, searching for a will match á.
This setting can be changed from the Search menu.
Where did the recent changes go?
Recent changes have been removed for performance reasons.
Where did the run history go?
Removed for privacy concerns.
No ntfs volumes indexed / empty result list after running Everything
Everything does not have permission to access NTFS volumes.
It is recommended to use folder indexing

-or-

Try enabling Run as administrator on the shortcut to Everything:

* Right click the Everything shortcut.
* In the Shortcut tab, click Advanced.
* Check Run as administrator.
* Click OK.
* Click OK.

Note: this will bring up the UAC prompt to run "Everything" with elevated privileges.

So should I re-index regularly to catch up with the changes made by others?
Or can I not use "Everything" to search our company network share (1000GB, some 30+ users)?

You can specify when to update each folder from the folder tab in the options window.

You may like to update a folder that doesn't change often once a week.
You may have a folder you wish to update every 5 minutes.
You will have to decide how often you want to update the folders.

I would like to recommend a highlight of this *warning*, because upon reading your code example, I started typing "size:>1gb" and shortly my disk led begin flashing and Everything just froze, I had to quit it through task manager. Maybe a better code example will be

Code: Select all

some_video_name avi size:>1gb
for those (like me) who tried the code example before reading the warning after

Anyway this is a great feature among others (I love the EFU list as well, that what I should tag as "offline database" or "saved search index for my colleague's hard disk") . Kudos for bring us the new version!!!

Given your update history, I know you might not answer this, but do you have any idea of the timeline on this?
Where did the recent changes go?
Recent changes have been removed for performance reasons.
<extremely sad face>

It's really too bad that you removed these two features. I use them both constantly. Recent changes are the only way to know where a file just went to. I have Everything always sorted by recent changes. It makes searching SO much faster because I can type just the extension and the file I'm looking for is right at the top. Is there any way to motivate you to leave it in and just not turn it ON by default like you did before?

Very impressed with the other changes you have made. Thank you for the greatest Windows program ever made.

I am reviewing the option to re-add recent changes, search history and run history / open source "Everything".

It will take a LONG time to re-implement some of these features so please be patient..

ETP/HTTP might be back as a plugin.. if I find time.

good to see your back :)
what about having the removed features disabled by default in settings?
that way everyone wins?
ETP/HTTP pretty please its basicly one of the biggest useful things about everything :P
plugins you say? will there be a SDK? so other people might create a better ETP/HTTP?

everything has been useful for so long for me, i love it, keep up the good work

I haven't even tried the new version. I just want to say that Everything has become an absolutely essential tool for me so THANKS VERY MUCH... and I'm so glad to see you're still developing it. I thought it was dead.

This is one piece of software I'd actually rather pay for, to help ensure it will stay active. Knowing you're still around I have just sent a $15 donation. Should / would have done it before but wasn't sure the money would go anywhere useful.

Again, thanks

Is there a way to bring back the old system tray icon? I found the old one much...prettier :)

To use your own custom icon file:
  • Rename your ico file to Everything.ico and place it in the same location as your Everything.exe file.
  • Restart Everything.

I updated to the latest beta version and was hoping that an old issue (http://forum.voidtools.com/viewtopic.ph ... t+gr#p2295) would have been removed by now: I'm using a German keyboard and have Strg+Alt+E set as my New windows hotkey. When I press Alt Gr (right Alt key) and E to get the Euro sign Everything launches. void, any chance this could be fixed in an upcoming version?

Thanks

AFAIK Windows itself cannot distinguish between Ctrl+Alt and AltGr.
So I'm afraid you'll have to use a different hotkey for "new window".

Unfortunately Elbart is correct, you might like to try autohotkey.

Thank you void for resuming the work on this awesome application.
I have one suggestion i wish to see fulfilled; Can you use windows sorting method for numbers?
For example: files: 1.txt,2.txt,9.txt,10.txt,12.txt will be sorted in everything as: 1.txt,10.txt,12.txt,2.txt,9.txt !
I think you get what i mean!

There is quite a performance hit when sorting numbers so that 1.txt < 10.txt.

I will re-consider this option.

I "assume" the old DLL files from the SDK and from the Clarion connection will not work with this new version? I admit I am holding back because 1.2.1.451a runs so nicely for me and I am afraid to lose anything.... Perhaps I should have SE and SEnew and try it.

If they don't will there be some way to be able to tell which version is running and thus have an external application connect to whichever version is running? I have encouraged lots of people in the past to get SE and they probably will never seek out an update.

Thanks again for one of the most fantastic Windows products of all time and it is time to donate again.

Hi Bob,

The Everything SDK and IPC has not changed.

Install Everything 1.3 into its own folder if you wish to use both Everything 1.2 and 1.3.

Thanks for the support.

where's the search filters edit? Like for example, .epubs isn't in your documents filter, mp4 isn't in the video filters...

Search -> Filters -> Organize Filters.

The video filter should include mp4.
