Sidebar "Everything" automatically use subfolders

Post by meteorquake »

When you have "[ ] Subfolders" unticked in the folders sidebar bottom and then click its root folder "Everything", it's obviously not going to show any results at all at that point, so is of no utility (until you click subfolders on).
* I suggest that clicking the root "Everything" ignores the Subfolders option being off and always shows subfolders.
This would be handy when you are basically wanting to be working with subfolders off but need regularly to click Everything and type to find something then drag one of the results onto the Folders title to jump there (at which point the subfolders off option applies again as usual). It would also give fresh meaning to the root's name "Everything".

I will consider an option to show all results when the Everything item is selected and subfolders is unchecked.
Thank you for the suggestion.

One way to do this now is press Ctrl + Space to unselect the currently selected item.

When no items are selected, all results are shown, even when subfolders is unchecked.

You can also double click the folder text in the status bar on the right to clear the current selection.

I have on my TODO list to add a favourites folder.
I will consider an option to add a favourite location that shows all results.

I'd not registered that Ctrl-Space trick - that solves an awful lot of "workflow" for me!!

Everything 1.5.0.1356a adds a command to clear the folder sidebar selection.

To bind a keyboard shortcut to this command:
  • In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Keyboard tab on the left.
  • To the right of Show commands containing, search for:
    clear
  • Select Folders | Clear Selection.
  • Click Add....
  • Press a new keyboard shortcut and click OK.
  • Click OK.
