Folder Bar Drag-Drop : To pop-open or not

Post by meteorquake »

In the folder bar, you drag something over a folder to drop it and in a moment that target folder pops open.
One of the perennial problems is that when it pops open the parent you are hovering over shifts away to make the children visible.
So in practice you hover there and don't drop the item out of concern the children will appear in place of the target at the moment of dropping and you'll drop it into a child which wasn't wanted. Because you therefore had to wait you then have to hunt up for the parent again to drop it in, which is awkward when there are a lot of children.
It would be good if there were some way to solve this!
Personally I'd opt for some way to control the popping open for example if you hover over the folder icon it doesn't pop open, if you hover over the name it does (closest to current arrangements, or otherwise hover over the + and it expands, anywhere else it doesn't, or some option indicating user wish). I think this is preferable to having an expand delay option because unless the expand is extremely slow you'll end up waiting for it to pop open to be sure - I'm presuming most people are going to be precise enough with mouse placement to take advantage of this.
Perhaps there are some other ideas for this control?

You're talking about in the Folder Tree (view) ?

In any case, there is also the right-click context-menu when focused in the Results List Path column, which lists the current folder, & that can be expanded, displaying its' parents.

The aim is to have a way of dropping items into the folder bar folder without it popping open. Having a way for it to pop open is also often useful so I think exact drop spot is the easiest way to distinguish this, other than key modifiers (Alt would be useful although it's currently taken up by creating a short cut) or some form of right-button dragging...

Everything 1.5.0.1379a will no longer shift the view when dragging items over the folder sidebar.

Folders can still be expanded when hovering over them with the cursor.

Thank you for the suggestion.
