Hi All,
I just wanted to share that I'm really enjoying and benefiting from the search utility for Windows, 'Everything' by Voidtools.
It's one of those utilities I stumbled across after having it vouched by others. I've never really liked Windows search. I've since learnt it has more capabilities than I knew of, but I am attaching significant value to Everything's simple, compact and above all responsive UI. It doesn't hurt that the 'live search' for files by name is really quite fast.
I also like being able to use regex, wildcards and so forth.
I have a few questions relating to Everything, things I couldn't learn from its extensive FAQ:
Does anyone know whether Windows Search and its indexing of NTFS volumes is turned on by default in Windows 10, for instance?
Does anyone know if Everything depends in any way on Windows Search and indexing, or whether it's usage of the 'NTFS Master File Table' and 'NTFS change journal' are independent of Microsoft's search technology? If it is independent, could we turn OFF Windows Search's indexing in favour of using Everything?

No it does not rely on MS "Search".anyone know if Everything depends in any way on Windows Search and indexing, or whether it's usage of the 'NTFS Master File Table' and 'NTFS change journal' are independent of Microsoft's search technology

As far as turning it off, that's probably fine (or at least fine for me).
(I have no interest in MS indexing anything of mine.)
I'm not sure if Everything may piggyback onto certain features of (Windows) Search (for some "advanced" abilities; like for [some] Properties [in Everything 1.5alpha])?
On my end, Win7, it seems I do have Search "running", though it has very very little to do (& since you brought it up, I think I'll just zap it).
(I don't use IE either, for that matter.)
Ah, maybe for the Start Menu?
Maybe if disabling Search, something with the Start Menu may change?
(Does 10/11 even have a Start Menu anymore?)

OK, so in 1.5alpha, si: does piggyback on "Search".
See also, viewtopic.php?p=55001#p55001.
(Again, in my case, as I have virtually nothing indexed in Search, si: cannot return very much .)

If you don't use si: there is nothing in Everything which calls Windows indexer.therube wrote: ↑Thu May 11, 2023 3:39 pm OK, so in 1.5alpha, si: does piggyback on "Search".
